Dear friends,
I would like to start by congratulating the final-year students on graduating and getting their degrees, facing every difficulty that has come along the way! Hospitality is a meritocracy and you can go far without a degree, but make no mistake – you can go even further with your education and all you have gained along the way. No matter what your grades were, you have completed the important first steps of your career path and you have much to look forward to.
To everyone, I was humbled to be elected and serve as your President. It has been challenging, but fun and a pleasure. I have learned a lot from the role, but most of all I have understood the value of those surrounding you and what you can achieve as a team, so I thank the hard-working committee of the Bacchus Society, the determined staff of the Oxford School of Hospitality Management, and our powerful alumni community who have made this year’s events possible.
It was unfortunate we could not celebrate our final year at the Bacchus Ball or at our official graduation ceremony, but we will meet again when we are able to do so. We will come out of this situation stronger than ever, and we will be prepared for the inevitable challenges of the future, whatever they are. Meanwhile, it is time to hand over my responsibilities to your new President, Emma Roderick, who will do an excellent job without a doubt.
I would like to conclude by encouraging you to stay active, keep learning and developing your character and your skillset, and maintain a positive attitude. Stay ambitious, but don’t put yourself down if you don’t get your dream job right away. Adapt to the circumstances, and always add your personal touch to everything you do.
Thank you and good luck!
